Weapon Proficiencies

Weapon Proficiencies

In this updated version of Shards of Orn, everyone may now inherently use any weapon without a special Passive Effect. You still need to make sure you are using the correct weapon for the Triggers in your Combat Effects, but that is the only restriction!

Additionally, every character starts with 1 Weapon Proficiency. You may slot more Proficiencies into your character Class in your Passive Effects if you so choose.

Weapon Proficiencies give you the ability to add Delivery Modifiers to your attacks, similar to how Charms worked in version 3.5 of the game.

You may use the modifiers from the Weapon Proficiencies you have on your character while wielding the appropriate weapon up to 3x per rest total, in any combination.

Obtainable Proficiencies

Shield Proficiency

  • You may wield Heavy Shields, which are up to 1/2 your height in length and 1/3 your height in width.
  • In addition, you may Deflect Effects delivered by Arc or Burst that originate in front of you while wielding any weight of shield.
  • Any character may wield Light Shields, which are up to 1/3 your height in all dimensions.

Projectile Proficiency

  • You may Add Pierce to your Combat Effects while wielding a Projectile Weapon.
  • A Projectile Weapon functions as a melee Weapon of its size, so you can use it to attack in melee, and you may add the the Delivery Modifier of its size if you have taken the appropriate Weapon Proficiency for it
  • In addition, you can use a Projectile Weapon to deliver Packet and Ranged attacks in melee.

Melee Proficiencies

Unarmed

  • You may Add Twin to your Combat Effects while wielding Unarmed Boffers.
  • Unarmed Boffers can be no longer than the distance between your elbow joint and your outstretched fingertip.

Light Weapon

  • You may Add Pierce to your Combat Effects while wielding Light Weapons.
  • A Light Weapon cannot be shorter than the distance between your wrist and elbow or longer than the distance between your fingertip and shoulder, though certain abilities may allow you to treat other Weapons as Light. Light Weapons must be wielded in one hand.

Medium Weapon

  • You may Add Arc to your Combat Effects while wielding Medium Weapons.
  • A Medium Weapon is anything longer than a Light Weapon and no longer than the distance between your opposite shoulder joint and your outstretched fingertip. Medium Weapons may be wielded in either one or two hands.

Dual Wield

  • You may Add Twin to your Combat Effects while wielding two weapons according to the rules of the Two Weapon Trigger.
  • You may also choose to Add Pierce with Light Weapons and Add Arc with Medium Weapons if you have taken those Weapon Proficiencies and are wielding props of the appropriate length.

Heavy Weapon

  • You may Add Reach to your Combat Effects while wielding a Heavy Weapon or Great Weapon.
  • A Heavy Weapon is anything longer than a Medium Weapon and no longer than your full arm span. Heavy Weapons must be wielded in two hands.
  • A Great Weapon is anything longer than a Heavy Weapon by up to one handspan. Great Weapons count as Heavy Weapons for rule purposes (e.g., they can be wielded with Use Heavy Weapon and deliver Two-Hander Trigger abilities). However, they require a widened grip and cannot be wielded from the ends for safety reasons.

Spell Foci Proficiencies

A Spell Focus must be predominantly straight and blunt, and functions as a melee Weapon of its size without being able to use the respective Melee Proficiency. In addition, you can use a Spell Focus to deliver SpellSign, and Magic attacks as a melee attack. Note that melee attacks made to deliver SpellSign, and Magic triggers do not function as the Melee trigger, and still require you to trigger them as you would to use as a packet attack.

Wand

  • You may Add Spray to your Combat Effects while wielding a Wand.
  • A Wand is a Spell Focus at the Light Weapon length.

Scepter

  • You may Add Pierce to your Combat Effects while wielding a Scepter.
  • A Scepter is a Spell Focus at the Medium Weapon length.

Staff

  • You may Add Burst to your Combat Effects while wielding a Staff.
  • A Staff is a Spell Focus at the Heavy Weapon or Great Weapon lengths.
