Rituals

Rituals

Rituals cannot be used in combat to grant their effect unless otherwise specified; however, the player who has the Action with the Ritual trigger may use it to counter effects as normal during combat.

Immediate Effects

While out of combat, players may perform a 1 minute RP to grant the effects of an Action with the Ritual trigger to anyone who performs it with them at no Spirit cost, which will take effect immediately one time upon finishing the RP. There is no minimum or maximum number of participants for this type of Ritual cast.

Persistent Ritual Effects

Persistent Ritual Effects that are cast with the Ritual tagline will occupy the new Ritual slot on a player’s character sheet. These rituals must be performed by at least 2 players in addition to the Ritualist. Actions that usually would be expended immediately become a “Field” effect for the players who participated in and took the Persistent Ritual Effect  (example - Ritual Renew Limb would give each player who participated Field Renew Limb, fixing 1 Maim each time they finished Resting). Passive effects taken as a Persistent Ritual Effect will persist as usual.

Each player may take the benefits of one Persistent Ritual Effect at a time which automatically dissipates at the end of the shift it was cast. Each player that participates in the ritual to take a Persistent Ritual Effect must sacrifice 1 from their Maximum Spirit, which returns at the end of the shift. You may participate in and obtain a different Persistent Ritual Effect to overwrite the previous one, but the Maximum Spirit deduction stacks, and the entire stack of Spirit reduction is returned at the end of the shift. Participants other than the Ritualist MUST take the most recent Persistent Ritual Effect that you participate in the Ritual to cast. For each player in addition to the minimum 3 required to cast a Persistent Ritual Effect, the Ritualist or the receiving player must pay an additional Spirit.

Example 1:

You usually have 7 Maximum Spirit. You participate in a Ritual with the Ritualist and 2 participants and gain the Ritual Brave Effect for +1 Hits, and your Maximum Spirit is reduced by 1 to 6. Later that same shift, you participate in a Ritual with a different Ritualist and 3 participants and gain the Ritual Hone Effect for +1 Damage. You lose the affect of Ritual Brave, and your Maximum Spirit is reduced by 1 again down to 5. The additional person in this Ritual had to pay an extra Spirit to participate, and also reduced their Maximum Spirit from 7 down to 5. All players involved in these Rituals regain their regular Maximum Spirit at the end of the Game Shift.

Example 2:

A Ritualist and 2 participants are casting a Ritual, all of whom will reduce their Maximum Spirit from 7 to 6. Right before they start, 2 initiate Spanners arrive and want to participate as well. Since these new participants increase the Ritual group past 3, they must each pay an extra Spirit, which would reduce their Maximum Spirit from 3 to 1 each. The Ritualist is feeling generous, and instead takes on the additional cost themself. Each participant only reduces their Maximum Spirit by 1, while the Ritualist now reduces their Maximum Spirit by 3, all the way down to 4 total.

Ritual Concentration

A Ritualist can give out different Persistent Ritual Effects to different groups, with an increasing Maximum Spirit cost per Ritual they are Concentrating on. The first Ritual costs the standard 1, the 2nd Ritual costs 2, 3 costs 3, etc. This cost must be paid by the Ritualist, who can take whichever effect for themself that they choose. This incentivizes players to shop around for additional Ritualists instead of relying on just 1 person to provide the entire town’s rituals.

Bulleted Rules List

  • Cannot be cast in combat, but still can be used to Counter if you have the Ritual triggered Action on your character sheet (not granted by the Ritual Caster and in your Ritual slot).

  • Cost for immediate effect - 1 min RP, no minimum or limit to number of players, effect applies immediately and one time only, out of combat.

  • Cost: 1 min RP - 3 players minimum (Ritualist +2). Each participant pays 1 from Maximum Spirit to participate. Maximum Spirit returns to normal at the end of the shift. Each participant above 3 requires 1 extra Spirit each, which must be paid by the Ritualist or the receiving player.

  • Persistent Effect Rituals last until the end of shift, OR when the Ritualist cancels the effect early. Maximum Spirit does not return for ending early.

  • Players must take the Persistent Ritual Effect of the most recent Ritual they participated in. Participating in a new Ritual overwrites the previous effect and STACKS the Maximum Spirit reduction.

  • Ritualists may Concentrate on multiple rituals at once and take the Persistent Ritual Effect from any of them. Each Ritual beyond the first incurs an additional cost to the Ritualist’s Maximum Spirit equal to the the number of Rituals in effect by the same caster, stacking. 1 Ritual = 1 Maximum Spirit. 2 Rituals = 3 Maximum Spirit. 3 Rituals = 6 Maximum Spirit. 4 Rituals = 10 Maximum Spirit.
