Medical & Safety Information

Orange Headbands

Players with Orange Headbands are flagged as non-combatants for real life medical reasons. These players have certain restrictions for their own safety:

  • Support Only: Non-combatants may only use Curative and Enhancement Combat Effects. They may not benefit from effects that grant movement abilities or immunities in combat (BlinkCalmChargeEarth MeldRage, or Wood Meld), but may apply them to other players. If these abilities are allowed as part of Narrative checks, they may use them in out of combat situations.
  • Avoid Combat: Non-combatants must avoid areas of active combat. They may not purposefully enter melee range of monsters, even to deliver Curative Effects.
  • No Fleeing or Active Defense: Non-combatants may not flee from a monster that is actively approaching them explicitly, nor may they use Defensive Combat Effects.
  • Low Profile: Monsters will not attack Orange Headbanded Players so long as other players are actively engaging them.
  • Subdued by Combat Effects: Non-combatants are Subdued automatically upon being hit with any non-Beneficial Combat Effect. Note: Monsters should not actively strike Orange Headbanded players, but should walk within reach of them and state "Subdued".
  • Healed as Normal: Subdued non-combatants may be restored to life through any Effect that would normally do so (Heal, Revive, Share).

At the discretion of the officers and Head Medic, a player with a chronic or persistent condition may be assigned the role of Orange Headband. This role does not carry a Den Duty requirement, but is also precluded from signing up for Extra Den Duty. They may, at Den Keeper or Narrator discretion, be able to perform Extra Den Duty for short lengths of time if a piece of content has a role they can perform safely. The decision to assign the Orange Headband role to a player, and any limitations and considerations for the player's safety, are determined on a case by case basis.

Wildlife

Wasps. Please check cabins and public areas for wasp nests. If a nest has between 1-3 wasps, it is unlikely to be aggressive and can be easily knocked down with a stick. If there are more than that, use a longer stick and move away as soon as you remove the nest.

Snakes. The vast majority of snakes at Umstead are harmless black rat snakes. Please remember "harmless" is a wildlife science term that means "won't send you to the hospital", not "won't bite". If it has a mouth, it can bite. For the most part, leave snakes alone unless stuck in a building like the bathhouse. If a snake must be removed and no one is willing to catch it, gently slide a long stick under the snake so it drapes over it and carry the snake outside.

Mosquitos, Biting Flies, and Ticks. Most commercially available repellents use DEET as an active ingredient. If you have no sensitivity to it, any repellent containing 20% or less of DEET may be applied to the skin. Please remove plastic jewelry or watches first as the surfactants in the repellent will dissolve them. Repellent containing more than 20% DEET and up to 40% DEET should only be applied to clothing, not skin. Any percentage above 40% DEET should only be applied to shoes, and expect to replace them as the DEET will eat plastic, rubber, and leather.
